Pin yin description (ze refers to a heavily flooded place; xie means to drain out, to purge; so this herb is known to drain out accumulated water from the body; ze also means swamp; this herb grows in wet soil and in shallow water; so, it is the draining herb that is found growing in flooded soil)

Part used Rhizome (dug up in winter when the stems and leaves start to wither; fibrous rootlets removed and coarse outer skin scraped off)

Traditional Chinese uses Promotes urination and leaches out damp, clears heat and purges fire
Traditional Chinese applications Infrequent urination and edema; heat lin syndromes (urinary disorders, usually with burning sensation, possible discharge of blood); diarrhoea; damp-heat syndromes in the lower abdomen, such as leukorrhea; fire agitation due to deficiency of the kidney yin
Possible unwanted effects Prolonged ingestion of large doses can irritate the stomach and intestines
